Spring weed communities of rice agrocoenoses in central Nepal

2016

AbstractRice field weed communities occurring in central Nepal are presented in this study. The research was focussed on the classification of segetal plant communities occurring in paddy fields, which had been poorly investigated from a geobotanical standpoint. In all, 108 phytosociological relevés were sampled, using the Braun-Blanquet method. The analyses classified the vegetation into 9 communities, including 7 associations and one subassociation. Four new plant associations and one new subassociation were proposed: Elatinetum triandro-ambiguae, Mazo pumili-Lindernietum ciliatae, Mazo pumili-Lindernietum ciliatae caesulietosum axillaris, Rotaletum rotundifoliae and Ammanietum pygmeae. D…

Farm Productions and Rural Landscapes

2017

Farm landscapes in the Philippines are dominated by rice and coconuts in most provinces. In a country of generally small farm holdings, rice, the staple food, is cultivated across the archipelago, even if corn plays a bigger role in the southern part of the country. In the mountains of northern Luzon, the Ifugao tribe have developed over several centuries a remarkable landscape of rice terraces on steep slopes, but most of the rice is grown in the plains of Central Luzon around Manila. The coconut “tree of life”, most abundant in Quezon and Bicol, is used in many different ways, from food to construction materials. Bananas and pineapple are the leading export productions, mostly grown on la…

Influence of Altered Microbes on Soil Organic Carbon Availability in Karst Agricultural Soils Contaminated by Pb-Zn Tailings.

2018

Soil organic carbon (SOC) availability is determined via a complex bio-mediated process, and Pb-Zn tailings are toxic to the soil microbes that are involved in this process. Here, Pb-Zn-tailings- contaminated karst soils with different levels (paddy field > corn field > citrus field > control group) were collected to explore the intrinsic relationship between Pb-Zn tailings and microbes due to the limited microbial abundance in these soils. The SOC concentration in the paddy fields is the highest. However, based on the soil microbial diversity and sole-carbon-source utilization profiles, the rate of SOC availability, McIntosh index, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Simpson’s diversi…

First insights into weed communities of rice agrocoenoses in southern Thailand

2015

The study presents the results of geobotanical investigations conducted in rice fields in southern Thailand in 2013. It is focussed on the classification of plant communities poorly investigated from a geobotanical standpoint. Altogether 125 phytosociological relevés were collected, using the Braun-Blanquet method. We noted more than 100 species in the vegetation plots, including many rare ones. We classified the vegetation into seven communities, including six associations. Five associations are proposed as new: Nymphaeetum nouchali, Fimbristylido miliaceae-Sphenocleetum zeylanicae, Ischaemo rugosi-Cyperetum pulcherrimi, Pentapeto phoeniceae-Aeschynomenetum indicae and Marsileetum minutae.…

Weed communities of rice fields in the central Pamir Alai Mountains (Tajikistan, Middle Asia)

2013

The study present results of geobotanical investigations conducted in rice fields in the central Pamir Alai Mts (Tajikistan, Middle Asia), mainly within Syr-Daria, Pyandzh, Zeravshan, Kafirnigan, Khanaka and Surkhandaria river valleys in the years 2009–2011. The researches were focused on classification of plant communities developing within this poorly investigated area. Habitat conditions were checked including conductometry, pH reaction, temperature, depth of water and, for several plots, also soil structure. Altogether 114 phytosociological relevés using the Braun-Blanquet method were sampled. The analyses classified the vegetation into 28 communities including 24 associations. Five new…

JENIS-JENIS GULMA PADA PADI SAWAH DI DAERAH TRANSMIGRASI PRAFI, MANOKWARI

2008

Several weed species were observed in the rice fields of the transmigration area Prafi SP 2 during April 2006 by the State University of Papua. The weeds were classified into three groups according to their morphology characteristics, and into four groups according to their habitat. The weeds were preferred by the rice pests as host plant. Few weeds were host for the rice fields such as Echinochloa crusgalli, Echinochloa glaberescens and Pennisetum purpureum

Long-term phytoplankton changes in a shallow hypertrophic lake, Albufera of Valencia (Spain)

1994

A long-term phytoplankton study was carried out in the Albufera of Valencia, a shallow hypertrophic lake (surface area 21 km2, mean depth 1 m, total inorganic nitrogen load 155 g m-2 y-1, total inorganic phosphate load 15 g m-2 y-1) from 1980 to 1988. The lake functions as a reservoir for the surrounding rice cultivation. From 1940's to 1988, its phytoplankton assemblage has been altered from a mesotrophic to a hypertrophic character, as consequence of the increasing pollution. For 1980–88, annual variations in the phytoplankton were less pronounced than seasonal changes. The hypertrophic and morphometric features of the lake favoured the stability of the phytoplankton assemblage and chloro…

Oxygen uptake by excised gills ofProcambarus clarkii (Girard) from albufera lake of Valencia, Spain, under heavy metal treatments

1986

The American red crayfish Procambarus clarkii, originally from Louisiana (USA) was introduced in Spain in the 70's in the Guadalquivir River swamps. It appeared first randomly and in a more regular basis afterwards since 1978 in the Albufera Lake south of Valencia and in the surrounding rice fields. Albufera lake and surrounding rice fields waters are being subject since the last three decades to very heavy load of sewage, toxic industrial residues including heavy metals and pesticides from the many urban and industrial settlements in the zone. In the present study, the authors have investigated the effect that heavy metals (Chromium, Cadmium and Mercury) have on the oxygen uptake by excise…
